Court and Notary Records in the
Province of South
Holland - 1600's - 1800's
Information about the Minor Court and Notarial records of South Holland can be requested from: Algemeen
Rijksarchief Website: http://www.archief.nl/rad/ara/index.htm There are a few exceptions: The
records for Charlois and Hillegersberg are in the Gemeentearchief in Rotterdam. A. The Notarial (Notariele) records have numbers by the name. If you request information you may do it as follows: "Notariele record for Lekkerkerk, Klaas van Dam, 4-24-1771 (20)." B. The Minor Court (Rechterlijke) records have roman numerals and numbers by the name. If you request information you may do it as follows: "Recterlijk record for Monster, CXV, nr. 72, document Huijg man der Bij en Barer Jacobs van Waerdengurgh, 21-3-1697." The following abbreviations have been used:
Here is a sample entry with the explanation: Name # 1: Jan Brouwer = the subject of the document (i.e. his will, etc.) Name # 2: Johanna Vermeer = usually the spouse of the person listed as #1. Town: Ter Aar = the town where the document was originally prepared and recorded. Date: Aug. 15, 1782 = the date the document was prepared. Specific Info: (20) = the page number of the document. General Info: B I 18-22 = book and page numbers where the document can be found. Record Type: R.A.
= Rechterlijk Archief or N.A. = Notariele Archieven. Notes: Other information in the record that may be of interest. Additional Information: Generally, the names that begin with "C" are combined with those that begin with "K". The names that begin with Z are combined with those that begin with "S". These rules were not followed consistently, therefore, you should look under both spellings. Because of the different spelling of names, be aware that a name not found under one spelling may be found under another. For example: Jan Jacobsz. van 's-Gravenmade will be found under "G". His last name could also be written "van Schravenmade". This spelling would be found under the letter "S" (Note that the Dutch do not alphabetize last names using name prefixes such as: van, de, den, 't, etc., as is done in America. Thus, "Van Dam" is listed under "Dam"). Also note that last names were not required before 1811, and therefore the last name could have been used sometimes and left off other times. This man could have been listed as Jan Jacobsz. in some records. You would, therefore find him listed under the letter "J". For more information on Dutch naming practices see "Tips on Dutch Research" and "Dutch first names and their variations" under "Helpful information for Dutch research."
